The effectiveness of the iPhone 4's dual mic during calls in an audio demo

As we know
all, the iPhone 4 is equipped with two microphones: one at the bottom of the device
to speak, and the other at the top to capture ambient noise and
delete from the conversation. The result is quite convincing (difficult
to hear that our correspondent is in a car for example) but we have
never really had the right to a comparison with/without noise reduction
until recently.

And the result is incredible as shown in the following video:

The second microphone is therefore in fact connected to a small chip called “Audience”.
Does she work miracles? The response in video below, with a
comparison between a normal phone and an iPhone 4, carried out by a man
crossing a crowded place and leaving a message on someone's answering machine
of his friends. (We recommend watching the video in 720p for full
better audio quality).

As it is in English, here is a brief summary based on the timeline of
the video:

  • 00'00 -> 00'13: Brief presentation of the video.
  • 00'13-> 01'03: Test with any phone. The man passes
from empty areas to areas where there are people, as we can very well
    hear it.
  • 1'12 -> 2'09: Test in the same area, but this time with a
    iPhone 4.

Conclusion: removing ambient noise with an iPhone
4 is incredibly effective! When the man who left the message
crosses an area shielded by people and he is silent, we do not hear
absolutely nothing. Which perhaps explains all these calls from your friends since
an iPhone 4 where they say they are at the supermarket, in a car or elsewhere where
there is normally a lot of noise, and you hear absolutely nothing
behind them... Or maybe they're bluffing, who knows?
