We have a lot
talked about Squids since last year, especially around the release of
first episode in 2011, which marked us by its ability to be played
both in transport during small games, and in offering a real
depth in its gameplay and its universe. In addition to being very cute, being
French and to be as perfect for adults as for the youngest, Squids
contains real strategic elements and a very long lifespan.
Under deceptively similar appearances, its sequel, available today on
the App Store, offers a game that has been profoundly improved in many aspects.
Storywise, Squids 2 picks up exactly where the first episode
stopped: our group of little octopuses arrives in a new universe,
that of the Wild West, always looking for a way to stop the "slime
black" which threatens their world. Once again each level is linked to the
following by the evolution of a very pleasant scenario, far from being
infantilizing but still accessible to the youngest. The levels,
let's talk about it: the cards are much larger than in the
first Squids but fragmented into sections which represent as many missions,
the return trips are sometimes obligatory. We thus have the impression of
discover a world rather than a series of levels. Graphically, the game
keeps its touch but has evolved: the animated elements are more numerous,
certain parts of the level disappear to reveal a character
came behind, all this in the same good colorful taste as the first game, with
even more graphical search.
But where this sequel really stands out from the first episode is in the
depth of gameplay. Already the game starts much faster than its
predecessor, without forgetting the tutorial required for newbies but which
is much better integrated and will not disturb those who already know the game.
The pace of the missions is much more sustained and if we remember that the
difficulty increased suddenly in 1, it is much more
progressive in it. The number of items has been revised significantly upwards,
the number of playable characters too, their characteristics very
different ones bringing an even more pronounced strategic element, particularly in
time to form your team of 4 Squids before a level. The store has
completely revised and corrected: obviously the most impatient can
acquire a lot of objects at once by taking out their wallet, but
items, costumes, characters and others are earned naturally by crossing
the levels.
We always find the same challenge: finish a level in a certain amount of time.
given to earn a star, keep all your characters alive to
win a second and find the third hidden in the level. But with his
strategy and its greatly increased possibilities, the "replay" potential of
Squids Wild West is much more important than in its predecessor. We still feel
more than the team behind the game loves video games and pampers their baby
as it should be. At such a low price, Squids Wild West fits into the
pantheon of the best quality/price ratios for games on the App Store.
It's difficult to name games created for the App Store offering such
depth without forgetting accessibility.
We like:
- Even more aesthetically successful than 1.
- Technically more advanced than 1.
- Games can last as long as 5 minutes or 1 hour.
- The strategy is very in-depth compared to the first game.
- The number of items to unlock.
- Several free updates already planned (levels,
characters, etc.). - Eye-catching storyline and characters.
- A smart casual game! It's rare on the App Store!
- Plus not expensive given the content.
We like less:
- Well nothing.
- Oh yes, a multiplayer mode is missing. But given the content already offered, we
forgive them.
