Recovery in smartphone sales compared to the first quarter of 2020
More generally, smartphone sales fell from 33.4 million units in the second quarter of 2019 to 31.9 million units in the second quarter of 2020, a drop of 10%. Despite everything, shipments marked an increase compared to the first quarter of the current year, which can be explained by the resumption of production in China.
70% of smartphones shipped to the USA were manufactured in China, a percentage which was 60% in the first quarter of 2020.
Vincent Thielke, analyst at Canalys, said about smartphone sales this quarter: “As the coronavirus pandemic forced consumers to stay home, 5G adoption in the United States failed to take off. Store closures and virus fears have limited interaction with demo models, consumers' tight budgets have further reduced their purchasing power, and with poor 5G network coverage in America's suburbs, consumers have seen many reasons to buy a 4G device instead. Despite weak 5G deployment so far, vigorous operator marketing in the coming quarters will be instrumental in catalyzing a multi-year transition period from LTE to 5G».
