Apple still third largest smartphone seller in the world

A new study from Counterpoint Research ensures that Apple would have sold forty-nine million iPhones in the second quarter of 2021. A score a bit worse than that of Xiaomi (fifty-three million), Samsung still holding the top of the basket with nearly sixty million Galaxy units sold. As for the big loser, it would of course be Huawei, victim of the heavy sanctions imposed by the Donald Trump administration a few months earlier.

In terms of income, however, it is unsurprisingly Cupertino which would win the palm of gold by capturing 41% of the market against… only 15% for Samsung. Needless to say, the results of other OEMs are also well below those of Apple.According to recent statements to its investors, the Californian brand would have generated no less than eighty-one billion dollars over the same period: a record for it.

Great performance from Vivo

In fifth place in the ranking, the Chinese Vivo would record an increase of ten points compared to the second quarter of 2020. A success due in part to its X60 Pro, a model praised by critics for its photophone qualities. Its main rear sensor is designed in partnership with Carl Zeiss, whose reputation has been established since its lenses helped capture man's first steps on the Moon in 1969.

What's more, the Vivo X60 Pro has twelve gigabytes of RAM coupled with a Qualcomm SM8250-AC Snapdragon 870 5G processor. A duo allowing it to reach speeds rarely matched in its segment, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is limited to half the RAM. The operating system, too, is obviously different: it is Android 11 with proprietary Funtouch overlay.

Oppo in ambush

Fourth, the Oppo company, also based in Dongguan under the control of BBK Electronics, reportedly sold thirty-four million smartphones between April and June. This is 36% more than last year, its best progression since 2016. The company's latest flagship mobile, the Reno 6 Pro+ 5G, has an AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz for a diagonal of 6.55 inches.

At a price of 520 euros, the product is much cheaper than its equivalent in the iPhone 12 range. With a front camera with a definition of 32 MPx, it is an excellent choice for selfies. But no TrueDepth on the menu of course…
