Apple's in-car system, or CarPlay, is very popular with iPhone users. This is why many car manufacturers offer it for free or as a paid option with their vehicles, but BMW has found a “solution” to monetize access to CarPlay.
Normally for existing cars, BMW charges for the option just once and around $300, to add CarPlay to the car's built-in navigation system.
But with a 2019 BMW vehicle, you have to forget the paid option, because BWM now offers a subscription of $80 per year (the first year is free), to be able to use CarPlay in your recent BMW vehicle.
This is a first in the world of car manufacturers, as many even more affordable brands offer CarPlay support in their vehicles for free.
We hope that this will not have repercussions on other manufacturers. Some users believe that this is a greedy decision by BMW, as the manufacturer does not need to add specific hardware to support CarPlay in its vehicles.
It is also possible that Apple will not like this, that a manufacturer charges a recurring subscription to have access to its platform.
What do you think of this subscription to have access to CarPlay in your BMW vehicle?
