The arrival of a new shoot-em-up from Cave is
always an event: the Japanese publisher offers very
arcade as we see too few these days and each time knows how to ensure the
background as well as form. After Espgaluda II for iPhone and its HD version for iPad,
after Dondonpachi Resurrection and others, here is Bug Princess. As much as
to say straight away: here is another successful shoot from the editor! In
On the other hand, a HUGE BEMOL is to be noted concerning this first application
so-called “universal” of Cave, which will leave a hell of a bitter taste to the
iPad owners. Explanations below…
We're not going to give you a whole overview on Japanese shoot-em-ups (come on
read our review of Espgaluda II iPad version for that). To summarize:
it's fun, it shoots everywhere, it's very impressive technically, very
colorful and the soundtrack is as powerful as possible. Bug Princess is no exception to the rule
but offers an aesthetic originality: the bestiary is only made
of insects. The publisher therefore completely let go by offering us the
the strangest enemies there are, animated in the most beautiful way, and whose
the “teeming” appearance on the screen is the most beautiful effect. Yum!
In comparison to an Espgaluda II (the reference), we can note that if
the screen is still admirably loaded with sprites, the general chaos
seems a little more organized and better thought out. The evolution is subtle but the
enthusiasts will note it immediately. The handling does not change, the tone does not
more, the race for the score will satisfy some while others will regret
that there are no more worlds proposed. Never mind, we move on to
all in all, a great time.
But there is a problem. A real one. A big one. And it's even quite new on
the App Store. By offering us its first universal application, the publisher
Cave made people happy on paper: no need to wait for a
“HD” version as for Espgaluda II! Well no. Pack this back for me
enthusiasm straight away, the disappointment is very bitter. Bug Princess looks good
being a universal application, the iPad version is just a big zoom
very disgusting and blurry on graphics that are already not technically sophisticated. That
either in full screen (to be activated in the menu options) or in a small
window, the result on iPad is much worse than a converted Megadrive game
on iPhone and zoomed in on iPad. Do you see the overview?
iPad owners: don't be fooled. Yes, it is
of universal application, but there is a good reason why Cave did not
not specified “HD” behind the title. On iPad the game is horrible.
We like:
- A busy shoot-em-up (graphics, sound, enemies, etc.).
- A truly original and delightful world of insects.
- Technically exhilarating.
We like less:
- A “universal” version that’s a real joke for owners
of iPad, condemned to support pixelated and blurry zoomed graphics. It is
horrible.
