Nowadays, “drawn” characters or emoticons in French are commonplace in our conversations, regardless of the platform. Apple is very up to date on the subject and regularly adds new emojis to its operating systems. The last additions date back torecent iOS 12.1 update.
But you should know these characters were notnot available in the early days of the iPhone. It is10 years agoexactly, that Apple has shipped thefirst emojis in your iPhone, initially foronly one country. This is their story.
Emojis were created in Japan in 1998 and quickly became very popular with Japanese users. So in2008, when Apple decided to launchiPhone 3G in Japan, emoji support was a necessity.
Apple therefore added this support with iPhone OS 2.2 (former name of iOS) with an emojis keyboard, which wasonly available for Japanese. It offered the following emojis.
The rest of the users around the world then had to resort to easter eggs, namelya hidden function in third-party apps, to unlock this keyboard.
In 2010, Apple added support for emojis worldwide for the first time, with Mac OS X Lion. And it isin 2011 with iOS 5.0, that Apple finally added the emoji keyboardfor all users. However, it still had to be activated in the settings.
The first update of this “emojis keyboard” then arrived withiOS 6.0 in 2012, with 376 new emojis. Incidentally, Apple has also adopted the Unicode system to ensure cross-platform compatibility of emoticons.
3 years later, in 2015, with the strong popularity of emoticons, Apple decidedactivate the emoji keyboard by defaultfor all users.
Since that time, it has remained one of the most popular keyboards in the world and is regularly updated.
At least once a year, new emoticons are added that reflect the company's popular trends and themes. The most recent additions date back torecent iOS 12.1 update.
Do you use them a lot?
