Atrial fibrillation is a heart problem which, if not diagnosed and treated in time, can cause death. One of its most common symptoms is an irregular heartbeat. The Apple Watch is notably capable of tracking the heartbeat and above all monitoring the regularity of the beat frequency, in order toreport any arrhythmia. To support this heart rate irregularity alert feature,Apple appealed to Stanford University in 2017. She then set up a major study. The results of the latterjust appeared, after many months of work:
More than 400,000 subjects wearing the watch were monitored, across 50 countries. For 8 months, watch wearers regularly shared their data with researchers.
It appears from this study that0.5% of 400,000 peoplewere notified of an irregular heartbeat at one time, or 2,000 subjects. Among them, approximatelya third were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation via ECG upon further examination.
More broadly, 84% of users who were notified of an irregular rhythm had confirmation, from the medical profession and via other additional examinations, that they had a heart that was particularly sensitive to atrial fibrillation. Finally, more than one in two people notified went to see a doctor as a precaution.
This research carried out by Stanford and Apple therefore highlights the usefulness that the watch can have in terms of heart health. The Apple Watch can be even more interesting at this level for subjects at risk.
We are impatiently waiting to be able to enjoy, in France, the ECG functionality of the Series 4 model. This remains for the momentreserved for Americans. In particular, it makes it possible to detect other symptoms of a potentially serious pathology.
