Great first for Strava, the most popular watch is no longer a Garmin

The number 1 social network for athletes in the world, Strava, has just published the results for its year 2024. With this study carried out on more than 5,000 volunteer athletes and data from the 135 million people using the application, Strava offers to detail who uses the application, why, how and with whom?

Strava notes in particular that group outings are more and more numerous, with an increase of 59% in this year 2024 alone. One in 5 athletes of “generation Z” would have managed tofind love with Strava, confirming the surprising role of social network dating applications.

Equipment: the crux of the matter

But to access all this data,Stravastill needs to collect them. For this, millions of people use a connected watch. Historically on Strava, it is the American brand Garmin which dominates the debates, ahead of other sports companies such as Coros, Polar or Suunto.

But in 2024, big change, Garmin lost its throne. The company was in fact dispossessed of its title by another, the most popular in the world: Apple. The Cupertino firm, the leading seller of watches in the world (single-handedly dominating all of Swiss watchmaking) has succeededto dominate the rankings on Strava.

If the Apple Watch remains the “beginners’ watch”, it is more popular than specialized watches from Garmin and its competitors. Apple's efforts in recent years to find a place in the sports watch segment seem to be paying off.

Apple's connected watch, available from €249with its SE version, is a magnificent gateway for novice athletes. They retain all the advantages of a “city watch” while enjoying the advantages of a “sports” watch. An in-between that seems to appeal to millions of people around the world, as this Strava report tends to demonstrate.
