iPad 3 and Retina screen: the consequences for universal apps on iPhone

And
the iPad 3 arrives with a Retina screen, and it seems more than
likely that this is the case, what will be the consequences for
iPhone owners at the level of universal applications
.

In fact, the universal apps contain both iPhone versions and
iPad and only the one needed is displayed on the screen. Therefore, the
size of universal apps is likely to increase considerably and therefore
Consequently, the 3G download limit will probably have to evolve. There
question is: in what sense?

You are not without knowing thatit is not possible to download
a 3G application if it exceeds 20 MB
. It's good for
your data plan, but as a result, you often have to connect via WIFI to
be able to download it.

However, Apple wants purchases on the AppStore to be immediate and
that’s what makes it strong. I want an app, I
download…now.

With the arrival of the iPad 3 and its HD screen, the user therefore risks
find yourself facing the next screen more and more often unless Apple has
anticipated the move.

Two solutions are possible:

  • The first and least likelyis ofincrease
this limit to increase it to 60 MB for example
    but this
would require reaching an agreement with the operators who should see the
    traffic increase.
  • The second idea is interesting. It consists ofset up
a mechanism allowing the app to only download the code
    necessary
. In practice, the app would need to be able to recognize
the iPhone, iPad, or iPad HD so that only the useful version is downloaded
    and not the rest.

Personally, I would rather opt for the second version. Whatever
either, Apple has probably already thought about the problem and we will surely know one
little more in the coming weeks.
