iOS 17: Apple moves a button and it risks making people unhappy

  • On the iOS 17 beta, Apple moved the button to end a call
  • Accustomed to the old location, some users risk getting lost
  • This change is probably linked to the new features that Apple will offer on the calls functionality

Sometimes, small changes to the iOS interface can have big impacts on users. For example, on iOS 17, which should be officially released this fall, Apple plans to move the button used to hang up a call. And although it is small, it is a change thatcould cause a lot of ink to flow, once the new operating system is available.

If iOS 17 is not yet available in stable version, it is already available in beta for testers. And recently, thanks to this beta, some media have realized that Apple is going to move the button we use to hang up, in the calls interface.

More precisely, as shownthis comparison of 01net, on iOS 16, the hang-up button is clearly distinguished from the other buttons in the calls interface. On the iOS 17 beta, the hang up button is still distinguished by its red color. But it is stored next to the other interface buttons.

Risk of confusion?

The problem is that for years Apple has accustomed iPhone users to the current location of the hang up button. Once iOS 17 rolls out, users may have difficulty finding this button quickly due to muscle memory. Or, they might press the wrong button, because of an old habit.

“Future iOS 17 update plans: Moving the “End Call” button to the bottom right corner of the phone. It’s going to upset me a little”, comments for example this Internet user.

You should know that with the iOS 17 update, Apple has planned some interesting improvements for calls. And it is likely that moving the button to end a call is linked to these new features. As a reminder, iOS 17 will allow you to personalize your contact display, which appears when you call someone.

In addition, the Cupertino company has developedLive Voicemail, which transcribes messages left on your answering machine in real time.

However, it is still possible that Apple will review the calls interface before the finalization of iOS 17, if it considers that moving the button is making too many waves.
