iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro: 6 new camera features in sight

iPhones have long been considered among the best mobiles in the world for photography, particularly alongside Google Pixels or certain Huawei mobiles. And with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max on the way in September, Apple should be no exception. The company would thus be on the verge of unveiling a quartet of new features for imaging, at least.

At the American company, however, we do not skimp on confidentiality. It is therefore important to remember that all of the new features listed here remain pure speculation for the moment, with Apple keeping its future products secret. To be sure, we will probably have to wait until the keynote which will revealthe new iPhone 16 Proat the end of the year. Artificial intelligence would be on the menu, by the way.

1 – Better photos with ultra wide angle

To begin with, you should know that the ultra wide-angle of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max should give pride of place to a definition of forty-eight megapixels. This is not new at Apple, since the wide-angle lens of theiPhone 15 Proand the iPhone 15 Pro Max is already entitled to it. The telephoto lens of their successors, for its part, should remain limited to twelve megapixels.

The amount of megapixels is not the only metric to follow, to know if a mobile is worthy of the name photophone or name. Despite everything, it is a key indicator of quality, since the higher it is, the less grain is present in the image. Likewise, if you zoom in post-production, you will be entitled to more details with a photo sensor equipped with forty-eight megapixels than with only twelve megapixels on the back.

2 – The iPhone 16 Pro would have a more powerful optical zoom

Speaking of magnification, you should know that the iPhone 16 Pro could be equipped with a 5x optical zoom. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro today has a 5x optical zoom. 3. Only the iPhone 15 Pro Max is entitled to5x optical zoom, Today. This, thanks to the presence of a “periscope” lens under the hood, which Apple markets under the name of “tetraprism” mechanism.

This new technology will be available on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, it seems. It is undoubtedly still Sony which will be responsible for designing the EXMOR photo sensor expected on the back, this subcontractor having been chosen by Apple for this position several years ago now.

We don't yet know the numbers for the aperture or sensor sizes, but the official datasheet will reveal more by September.

3 – What is the new Capture button?

Apple plans to install abouton Captureon the side of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The component would be positioned not far from thebouton Actionalready seen on the edge of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. For now, the objective of thisbouton Captureis not very clear but we could use it to control the zoom when shooting videos. To achieve this, it would be enough to doslideour fingers along the button, probably oblong in design.

However, it would be wise for Apple to allow us to customize the action triggered when the button is pressed, but we do not yet know whether this will be possible or not. Note, moreover, that thebouton Capturewould be a physical interface and not capacitive like the fingerprint sensor of the third generation iPhone SE.

4 – A new design for the iPhone 16 camera

Several image leaks have revealed a rearrangement of the back photo sensors of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. We discover that the lenses would be there like thisaligned lengthwiseof the smartphone. For comparison, with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the photo sensors are arranged diagonally.

Please note, however, that this should not change much in the user experience. On the other hand, even if the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are the same size as their predecessors, you may well not be able to reuse the protective shell that you purchased for one of the latter, if you renew your equipment. Damage.

5 – Apple would have planned a solution against reflections

Another new feature: be aware that Apple may also have new anti-reflective technology in the pipeline. This would make it possible, in particular, tofight against the unsightly effects ofghostingand luminous halothat may occur when capturing a snapshot. This type of incident happens especially when you immortalize a scene against the light.

We're not sure how Apple wants to implement this new change, but it's possible that a hardware change is causing it. Otherwise, be aware that many hypotheses rely on the arrival of features boosted by artificial intelligence with iOS 18. That is, the operating system which will power the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, given the photo editing capabilities of AI algorithms today, we can easily imagine how they could correct our images in order to limit the harmful effects of reflection.

6 – Encrypted visual search on iPhone 16 Pro

Finally, know that leaks shared in April mention the case of a “visual search” which could be end-to-end encrypted. We don't know more at this time, but this is reminiscent of the value proposition of Google Lens. A tool which, when you point your photo sensor towards a subject of interest, is able to recognize its features. For example, it could be a Wi-Fi code to enter to connect to a box, a good restaurant to discover or a text to translate.

Coming in iOS 18:
– "Safari browsing assistant"
– "Encrypted visual search"

Both features seem to use the Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple (so that they don't know your IP?).
