We have seen several rumors concerning the arrival this year of a triple photo lens in the 2019 iPhone.A photo of a spare partnotably showed the position of these three sensors, as well as a new type of sensor on the back of the iPhone.
According to Gizmodo China, the third photo sensor could be avery wide angle lens, while the new type of sensor would be linkedto the use of augmented reality.
Several smartphone manufacturers already use a very angle lens in their latest models, this is particularly the case with new smartphones from Xiaomi and Huawei. Apple could well adopt this trendwith a very wide angle lensabove the rest, according to Gizmodo.
In the spare part photo, there is also another location on the photo module, which couldan augmented reality sensor, to improve the accuracy of augmented reality with the iPhone's rear camera.
A laser telemetry system would usea “travel time” approachwith this sensor, which would project a ricocheting laser onto nearby objects in order to calculate and create a 3D image of the user's environment.
This would allowgreatly improve the augmented reality capabilities of the iPhone, which since iOS 11 with the ARKit framework allows developers to offer apps and games with augmented reality.
ARKit works quite well with flat surfaces for placing objects on them, but it has more difficulty with vertical surfaces, like doors or walls, due to the lack of depth perception.
This 3D camera system, mentioned by Bloomberg last year, would solve these problems and transform the iPhone into a real augmented reality tool, which would be more precise in many cases.
