iPhone: Apple still wants to add new buttons on the edge

A few months before leaving us, Steve Jobs, the founding father of Apple and the iPhone, revealed a wish list. In particular, he expressed his desire to simplify technology as much as possible, to make it accessible to everyone. This doctrine which had followed him all his life and had made Apple successful, he wanted to push it to the extreme.

So when on October 27, 2017, Tim Cook and his teams presented the iPhone X, many observers saw it as a signal sent to Steve Jobs. Despite his departure, his wishes are still respected and the quest for an ever simpler and more universal iPhone continues. But over the past 7 years, a lot has changed on the Cupertino side.

If the Home button has not made a comeback, it has even disappeared from the iPad, other buttons on the sides of the iPhone have appeared. And things are unlikely to get better. Indeed, a new Apple invention patent suggests that the Apple brand will introduce other buttons in the years to come.

In this document, discovered by the specialized site, Patently Apple, we learn that Apple engineers are working on a future iPhone with a multitude of Action buttons. Apple would not even have defined the precise role of these keys, they would simply be placed there, waiting for users to find any interest in them.

The “action” button as a model

This freedom of customization, unprecedented on the iPhone, is also far from resembling the dreams of Steve Jobs, who on the contrary pleaded for the most complete standardization possible. As a reminder, Apple has launched two new buttons on its iPhone in 2 years.

The Apple brand started with the Action button on the iPhone 15. It took the place of the “ring/silent” switch present on all iPhones since its launch. A few weeks ago, the camera control button arrived on the iPhone 16.
