A particularly renowned journalist was targeted by Pegasus

After having spotteda new virus of the same kind called Predatorlast December,Citizen Labstruck again. The cybersecurity specialist has just published a new report in partnership withFront Line Defendersand which reveals other names of victims of Pegasus spyware. The program had already beenincriminated in the national press in 2021.

His goal? Discreetly enter the smartphone of the target designated by the user and track their every telecommunications. Customers for this technology are primarily government surveillance agencies or law enforcement. And today, these are theJordanian decision-makerswho are accused of having probably hacked the mobile phones of influential journalists in their country.

Several victims

Several objectives were isolated by the researchers behind this discovery, includingAhmad Al-Neimat.Human rights defender, this anti-corruption activist is currently in prison but his iPhone was apparently hacked around January 28. The search reportedly lasted nearly two days, but it is difficult to estimate how much data may have been stolen.

Other victim:Suhair Jaradat, winner in 2006 and 2018 of the prizeAl-Hussain rewarding creativity in journalism. His phone may have been infected thanks to a corrupted link contained in an SMS received via the Messages application on May 11, 2020. Other attempts also affected the WhatsApp account ofJaradat, posing as an opposition Twitter user.

Finally, we can also cite the case of Malik Abu Orabi, lawyer and active member of theNational Forum for the Defense of Liberties. This time, his iPhone would have beencompromised at least 21 timesduring the period from August 2019 to July 2021.

Apple, however, announced that it had closed the gap allowing the malware to reach iPhones, but this patch already dates from September.
