For years, many Android users have complained about not being able to use iMessage features. The latter are often American, because the service is used much more at Uncle Sam's than elsewhere. The rest of the world mainly uses applications like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Because Apple doesn't bring iMessage support to Android, people who don't have an iPhone feel left out, especially in group chats. In the latter, they cannot send or receive high quality images, and do not benefit from advanced features, such as reacting to messages with an emoji.
To overcome this problem, the Beeper app attempted to integrate iMessage with Android using reverse engineering. But Apple considered this abreach of the security of its services. The Apple firm therefore blocked all attempts by Beeper to use iMessage on competing phones.
The Beeper affair mainly took place in the last quarter of 2023, during which Apple also announced that it would soon support Google's RCS on iPhone. Support had been announced for 2024, without further details, but Google has just communicated on a release period,for fall 2024.It could be that this coincideswith the release of iOS 18.
What is RCS?
TheRCSfrom Google offers users advanced messaging features, such as:
- see when someone is writing;
- receive a confirmation when your interlocutor has read or received your message; inform your interlocutor that their message has been read;
- send messages via Wi-Fi and mobile data;
- share files and photos in high resolution.
THE "screen effects» and the “custom bubbles» for RCS are currently in Beta and should be added to supported features soon. The RCS should also soon integrate “Voice Mood”, which allows you to add effects to voice messages.
Apple didn't listen to anyone except China
Many digital players have in the past urged Tim Cook to add iMessage to Android, or at least integrate RCS support into iOS. However, Apple's CEO never gave up. He even wenteven advising Android users to buy an iPhone.
The announcement of RCS on iPhone by Apple in November therefore surprised people who closely follow this affair, thinking that the firm had been forced by the European Union, but deny it.If Apple gave inregarding RCS on iPhone,it seems to be because of (or thanks to) China.We know Cupertino's relations with the Middle Kingdom, so it is not surprising that it isthe only one who could make Apple falter.
As stated above,RCS is likely to arrive in iOS 18. To find out if your iPhone will be compatible withthe biggest iOS update is here. For the main information about it,it's over there.
