It's relatively little known, but for several years now, AirPods Pro have had features supposed to help people who suffer from slight hearing loss. The main one is calledLive Listen. In particular, it allows you to amplify environmental sounds using headphones.
AirPods Pro will not replace hearing aids
And precisely, according to a study published this week in the journaliScience, the results of this system are very encouraging. Without completely replacing prescription systems, they can represent a form of alternative in certain cases.
This is the case with mild or moderate hearing loss, where AirPods Pro can follow a conversation almost as well as two devices available on prescription. One of the authors of this study, Yen-Fu Cheng, however, wanted to qualify:“They won't replace hearing aids, but it's a good way for people to experience what the world would be like if they could get some help, an upgrade to their hearing.”
This research involved 21 adults who had mild to moderate hearing loss. High-end hearing aids that cost $10,000 performed best. But ultimately, the AirPods Pro weren't that far off the mark, according to scientists, meeting the standards in four out of 5 categories. For their part, the AirPods 2 only met two out of 5 categories.
There is howevera big problem in terms of autonomybecause the AirPods Pro can only offer six hours of listening time and 4.5 hours of talk time, which ultimately remains a little limited for daily use.
