For a while now, the question of iPhone water resistance has been controversial. The latest iPhone 12 is rated IP68, a standard meant to allow it to withstand occasional splashes, or even last underwater at depths of 6 meters for 30 minutes. To verify on the ground, journalists fromCnethave subjected Apple's new smartphones to a battery of underwater tests.
Apple has been accused of misleading consumers about waterproofing
They traveled to mountain Lake Tahoe to carry them out. Using a drone, they then submerged the iPhone 12 underwater. The first test specifically concerned the IP68 standard. The journalists therefore held the phone for 30 minutes at a depth of 6 meters. Verdict: Everything worked perfectly.
The second evaluation consisted of diving the device to a depth of 20 meters for 40 minutes. Finally, the iPhone 12 once again held up the shock. The authors, however, noted some problems with the sound which was a little muffled but remained audible.
The final part of the test was to see if there was any long-term damage to the devices. A few were noted such as foggy front and rear lenses. The phone also displayed a diagnostic error while charging.
The publication of our colleagues' test comes at a special moment for Apple. The Cupertino company recentlyfinedof 10 million euros from the Italian competition watchdog. At issue: the Apple brand was accused of having deceived consumers about the waterproofness of the iPhone 8 to 11 Pro and Pro Max and all generations between these two models.
