890 billion won, or a little more than 666 million euros: this is the amount receivedLG Electronicsduring the first quarter of 2022 from two other manufacturers, to resolve a dispute over patent infringement. By paying this amount, those responsible gain the right to continue to exploit the incriminated technologies.
In a new article signedThe Elec, we learned yesterday that one of the culprits is in fact Apple, whose finances settled a large majority of the transaction to the tune of600 million eurosapproximately. LG thus granted Cupertino a license lasting around ten years in total, knowing that the Korean for its part withdrew from the smartphone market, which it had stamped with its brand with successes such as the LG G Flex curved and the LG G5.
Other projects in progress
In the meantime, LG and Apple should continue to collaborate since the former provides millions ofscreensevery year at the second via its subsidiary LG Display. Among the components in question, we find the panels of certain iPhone 13but also displays for iPhone 14according to rumors from Asian subcontractors.
There is also LG Innotek, which this time designs parts used in the iPhone photo sensor. We also owe the imaging to Sony, Japanese behind the Exmor lens chosen by Apple for many of its mobiles.
And after?
When the ten-year period is over, Apple will have the option of either renewing its partnership with LG or withdrawing from it. In this case, it will then have to rely on an alternative capable of sustaining the rapid pace of iPhone sales. However, we know that the Apple is advancing its pawns more and more on the chessboard ofinternalization: as recently as 2020, the firm left Intel to imagine the design of its own computer chips.
With its Daisy robots, Apple is recycling more and more old smartphones on its own account. The future is therefore all set towards 100% original parts allowing us to free ourselves from the competition…
