Mammoth or Monterey: what name for the new macOS?

WWDC 2021 is fast approaching. Starting this Monday at 7 p.m.,you will also be able to follow in our companyApple Keynote. This year again, the conference will be virtual due to the pandemic. We can already expect new announcements during this live broadcast. The latest rumors speak in particular of a new MacBook Pro 16, but also of new AirPods and AirPods Pro.

Next week, Apple will also unveil its next version of macOS. The Cupertino company should therefore say more about its features and reveal its name. The latter is precisely the subject of much speculation. According to9to5Mac, the new operating system could be called “Mammoth” or “Monterey”.

Are we heading towards major or modest changes?

In detail, our colleagues looked at the brand names registered by Apple dating from 2013 and 2014. We then found very varied names: “Diablo”, “Condor”, “Tiburon”, “Farallon”, “Miramar” , "Rincon", "Pacific", "Redwood", "Shasta", "Grizzly", "Skyline" and "Redtail". As of April 26, none of these terms have been renewed with two exceptions: Monterey and Mammoth.

The article specifies that Mammoth would only be used in the event that the new version of the operating system was considered "important". She would come to represent the town of Mammoth Lakes in California. It is a ski resort surrounded by splendid landscapes. Monterey could be chosen for a new, more modest version of macOS. It would ensure a perfecting of the major changes made by Big Sur last year.

In any case, we only have a few days left before discovering the name that Apple has chosen for the new version of its operating system. As a reminder, you canfollow the conference live in text on iPhon.fr this Monday from 7 p.m.. When the time comes, you will also be able to follow the main announcements in detail in our dedicated articles. Until then, we will offer you several surveys in order to better understand your expectations for this Keynote.
