Fitbit, the activity tracker specialist, which was recently acquired by Google, is in the process of rolling out a brand new feature for users of certain Fitbit products. Namely, oxygen saturation, which allows you to know the quantity of oxygen in the blood.
Fitbit is in the process of deploying this new feature via a software update for certain watches and connected bracelets of the brand. This is a feature that could also land in the Apple Watch, thanks to a future watchOS update.
Indeed, iFixit discovered by inspecting the innards of the first Apple Watch that it already had the necessary sensors to measure the level of oxygen in the blood.
However, we have never seen the color of it since 2015. Suggesting that Apple may want to refine it or may be waiting for authorization from the medical authorities in the US (FDA) to launch this functionality.
In the meantime, American users of certain Fitbit products such as Fitbit Ionic, Versa, and the Charge 3 bracelet will be able to monitor their oxygen saturation using the Fitbit app.
Measuring the level of oxygen in the blood allows, among other things, more precise monitoring of sleep, and the detection of disorders such as sleep apnea.
