Security: Android boss tackles Apple's iMessage format

The magazineGolfDigestreported a rather original story this Wednesday. Bryson DeChambeau, a high-level golfer who notably won the US Open in 2020, would have posed a problem for his team because… he does not use an iPhone! Indeed, while all his teammates communicate via a group chat on the iOS Messages app, the Californian uses traditional SMS and therefore cannot participate.

The anecdote did not fail to provoke a reaction from Hiroshi Lockheimer, boss ofGoogleChrome but also Android, Chrome OS, the Play Store and Google Photos following the promotion of Sundar Pichai:

💚 Group chats don't need to break this way. There exists a Really Clear Solution. Here's an open invitation to the folks who can make this right: we are here to help. 💚💙https://t.co/4P6xfsQyT0

As we can see in his tweet, the leader believes that this type of incident should not take place thanks to an implied solution: the RCS. Behind this acronym lies the Rich Communication Services protocol, which more or less allows all brands to adopt a standard similar to iMessage but universal. However, Apple refuses to keep up with the times.

What are the benefits for the RCS?

Recommended by the three largest American operators (Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile), RCS technology is much more efficient than SMS. Indeed, this makes it possible to better support high definition photos and associated videos, but also audio content and therefore groups. What's more, and this is probably what stands out the most given the Apple's pedigree, it is also a more secure process.

So, when a message is sent from an iOS mobile to an Android smartphone, it is not end-to-end encrypted contrary to Apple's promise. This can be noticed - for some - by green bubbles (and not blue) in the Messages app: caution.

Messages updates with iOS 15

If the RCS does not seem to be in the cards for the immediate future at Apple, the firm has not abandoned the development of its Messages platform. Indeed, installing iOS 15 gives access to several new features on this side, including:

  • Shared with you (equivalent to the Files section of a Slack conversation orShared multimedia contenton Facebook Messenger)
  • new Memojis to personalize yourself
  • Photo collections (to display all received photos in a condensed manner)
  • change phone number in the middle of a conversation if you have two SIM cards
