Not all compatible iPhones will have the same iOS 17

Apple has just presented iOS 17 this Monday. The new version of its operating system for iPhone arrives with a nice list of new features (which you can findici), but not all of them are compatible with your iPhone. Indeed, several features remain exclusive for certain iPhones.

If Apple does not specify the technical reasons behind this choice, the power of the processor is surely the key element to take into account. In its recent history, a precedent already took place last year with the arrival of Stage Manager on iPads, only those with an Apple Silicon chip.

This time the restriction is less visible and it is models prior to the iPhone 12 that are affected. The latter, released between 2018 and 2020, will therefore not have access to allwhat's new in iOS 17, although the update can be installed on devices. A specificity that makes these phones a little more unique in Apple's eyes.

What functionalities are affected?

Among the many features presented by Apple this Monday, several will not be available on the iPhone XS and 11. This is particularly the case for manual reactions on FaceTime. Apple explains that with iOS 17 it will be possible to add animations and elements during a FaceTime call manually.

Another feature only available for iPhone 12 and above is advanced autocorrect. Apple presented this feature in detail during the conference this Monday. In addition to correcting words written by the user, autocorrector is now capable of pre-filling sentences based on the user's writing habits. A technical advance enabled by recent and powerful processors, which are not in the iPhone XS and 11.
