TSMC announced a few days ago that the company would build its first factory in the United States in Arizona. According to the company's president, the latter should open its doors in 2024, and will focus largely on the production of Apple chips: A and M. If this last information has not yet been explicitly confirmed by the presidents of the two companies, it would be unlikely to see TSMC arrive on American soil without producing for one of its best clients: Apple.
The first walls of the American factory should be erected in 2021, and the first chips from the factory could be manufactured in 2024. As a reminder,TSMC is the exclusive manufacturer of the A-series chips that Apple uses in its iOS devices, the arrival of this new factory will therefore allow Apple to have even more production capacity for its chips.
The United States, then Japan?
TSMC President Mark Liu confirmed that this factory, costing the company a whopping $12 billion, would produce these chips during the year 2024, not before. The first engineers from Taiwan to study recruitment arrived on the site at the end of last April.
In addition to this opening towards the United States,TSMC expected to expand to Japan soon, in Kumamoto Prefecture, according to information from Nikkei Asia. But Liu advocates caution on this subject, ensuring that nothing has been done yet. He points out that the potential factory in Japan is not included in TSMC's three-year, $100 billion capital spending plan, mechanically pushing back its construction to 2025, at least.
TSMC is today one of the leaders in the semiconductor market. It is also one of the oldest and largest subcontractors of Apple with whom the Taiwanese firm maintains privileged relationships.
