In India, Apple is trying to assert its right of reply by asking the government to modify future regulations aimed at imposing USB-C. This charging standard will be mandatory within the European Union by the end of 2024. But the Apple firm has already chosen to get up to date, by updating its high-end iPhones accordingly. All iPhone 15 andiPhone 15 Proare thus compatible, although this is not yet the case for previous models. The third generation iPhone SE, still in store, remains rechargeable via the Lightning connection for the moment.
If the subject makes headlines on the Indian peninsula, it is for a very good reason. Apple's subcontractors responsible for assembling iPhones employ tens of thousands of people there, in factories whose working conditions are sometimes considered catastrophic. However, for the Cupertino giant, imposing USB-C again could reduce the rate of its production rate in the country of Droupadi Murmu.
USB-C: what are the advantages?
With a USB-C charger, any user will soon be able to use a single cable for all of their devices. Connection is therefore increasingly favored, both by manufacturers of monitors, wireless headphones, tablets and even smartphones and wireless charging solutions (via Qi technology).
USB-C, like Lightning, is also reversible. The only downside, and not the least important: for anyone who already has an iPhone released before the end of 2023, they may soon have to invest in a new charger. Apple, however, provides a universal cable within the box of its premium mobiles. However, the associated power adapter has been missing for several years now.
No consequences in Europe
Even if India agrees to react to Apple's lobbying in its favor, there is little chance that this will impact relations between the firm and the European Union. Indeed, the legislation imposing USB-C has already been approved on the Old Continent. Its application will take a few more months, but many headed devices are up to date. The AirPods Pro, for example, abandoned Lightning in favor of the universal standard very recently.
All iPads are also USB-C rechargeable now. In any case, regarding the new models available in the Apple Store at the moment.
