3 things to know about Ferret, Apple's brand new AI

Apple has just released Ferret, its first conversational artificial intelligence. The arrival of this project clearly demonstrates that the Apple brand is working internally on the development of an AI modelclose to ChatGPT. According to the latest rumors, Apple is several months late in creating its language model.

Ferret is therefore the first stone in a long road for Apple. Published as an open-source project by the Cupertino company, the project was presented in detail by researcher Zhe Gan, a specialist in artificial intelligence issues. According to the information he gave on this project, Ferret would have been developed jointly by teams from Apple and researchers from Columbia University.

Descriptive AI

Ferret would be more precise than GPT-4 in describing images. Because this is the great strong point of Apple's artificial intelligence. The latter must be capable of very precisely transcribing the composition of an image. A skill that is still quite rare in the world of AI.

🚀🚀Introducing Ferret, a new MLLM that can refer and ground anything anywhere at any granularity.

Ferret, a unique program

In addition to being different by nature, by focusing on AI, Ferret is a real project apart for Apple. In fact, the Apple brand presented this new program under an “open source” license. In other words, everyone can use, modify or improve Ferret as they wish.

The use of this very permissive license contrasts with the historical practices of Apple, known for enclosing all its tools in a very protected ecosystem. However, this is not the first time that Apple has presented an “open source” project in its history. The Apple brand had already used this license in the past, notably for its Webkit service or to developa Swift programming language.
