If you use WhatsApp and/or Facebook Messenger and live in the European Union, you are not about to uninstall these applications from your smartphone. Indeed, while Meta's messaging services already had some advantages over the competition, these will become even more practical, sinceMeta will make WhatsApp and Messenger interoperable with other messaging apps. This is a feature that is required by theDigital Markets Act, the new EU legislation to regulate digital giants.
Meta gives new details
In March, Meta shared some technical information on this interoperability. The group had notably specified that for an application to be interoperable with WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, it must adopt the Signal encryption protocol, or an equivalent security technology. And recently,Meta has released new details. This explains that connecting WhatsApp or Messenger to another application will be easy. Meta applications will also send a notification when the functionality is available, and when new platforms become interoperable. In other words, Meta will not attempt to dissuade users from using this interoperability feature.
Otherwise, regarding message management, Meta indicates that the user will have the choice between mixing all their messages in a single tab, or using a separate folder for messages from other applications. And the group will not only offer basic messaging functions, but will provide other features like reactions, typing indicators, etc. when chatting with users of third-party applications.

Groups and calls will be available
Otherwise, Meta explains that, in accordance with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act, WhatsApp and Messenger will allow you to create groups with users of other applications from 2025. And in 2027 it will even be possible to make audio or video calls. But at the moment, we do not yet know which applications will be interoperable with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
“We will continue to collaborate with third-party messaging services to provide the safest and best experience. Users will begin to see the third-party chat option when a third-party messaging service has built, tested and launched the technology necessary to make this feature a positive and secure user experience., says Meta on this subject.
