We talked about it agoabout ten
update the setbacks of GT Advanced, the company that was to provide Apple with
quantities of sapphire crystal, normally intended for iPhone 6 screens
and 6 Plus.
The supplier, engaged in a joint venture with Apple, which had bet
enormously on this production, apparently was not able to keep its
commitments whether in quality or quantity. Result, aplacement in
backup proceduresurprise, apparently for Apple
also.
Since then, Apple has been fighting to ensure that confidential information relating to
to the partnership is not communicated. We have just learned that both
ex-partners signed an “amicable” agreement:
Under this agreement, GT Advanced will have the possibility to resell the equipment of
its establishment in Mesa, Arizona, in order to reimburse Apple, which had
participated in the creation of the factory. In return, the two ex-partners
would be released from their (drastic) contractual relationships. The documents
confidential information which could have been published as part of the procedure of
backup will not be published.
Unfortunately, this is accompanied by a closure of the factory, which should have
employ nearly 800 people.
A real industrial fiasco which shows that if the bet of becoming
supplier for the iPhone is potentially a formidable accelerator for
a business, it can also fail.
Will we one day see ultra-resistant crystal iPhone screens?
sapphire?
Maybe, but a priori they should not be produced by Gt Advanced,
knowing that Apple already has suppliers for the Touch Id buttons of
the iPhone and for the Apple Watch glass, coming in early 2015.
