11 years ago, Steve Jobs died at the age of 56

On October 5, 2011, the co-creator of the Apple company died after months of illness. The leader suffered from pancreatic cancer, which also caused fatal respiratory arrest, 11 years ago to the day.

Like every year, this anniversary of the death of one of the most important figures in the history of tech allows us to look back on the life of the man, but also that of the inventor.

Steve Jobs, an electronics genius

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco. He was born to a father of Syrian origin and a mother of Swiss origin. However, it was quickly adopted by Paul Reinhold and Clara Jobs.

At the age of three, he moved with his adoptive parents to Mountain View. His father then taught him the basics of electronics, before he developed an interest in computers in middle school and then in high school. He also assembles hisfirst frequency meter at the age of only 13.

It was also during his “High School” years that he met a certain Steve Wozniak. It was with him that he carried out numerous experiments in electronics in particular. For example, in 1971,at the age of 16, the duo manufactures and sells several copies of a device allowing long-distance telephone calls to be made without paying operators.

In 1974, after stopping his studies at university, he managed to find a job withAtari. Steve Wozniak will also help him carry out certain tasks for the popular video game company of the time.

  • 1975 :that year, Steve Wozniak assembled the Apple I. While the inventor would have wanted to freely distribute the plans for his machine, Steve Jobs convinced him that it would be more judicious to sell the Apple I in series. The two Steves then created the Apple company with this in mind.

  • 1984 :Steve Jobs left Apple in 1985 to found the company NeXT Computer. In particular, he launched the NeXT Computer in 1988, but sales were disappointing. In 1990 the NeXTcube was released, presented as the first interpersonal computer, capable of sharing voice, image and video via email. In 1993 NeXT Computer became NeXT Software and focused on software distribution
  • 1986 :Jobs purchased Graphics Group, later renamed Pixar, from Lucasfilm. It was in fact the “computer graphics” section of George Lucas' company. It was with the film Toy Story released in 1995, produced by Disney and Pixar, that Pixar gained fame. Disney will buy Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion
  • 1996 :Apple gets its hands on NeXT for $429 million, which allows Steve Jobs to find a place within the company he co-created.
  • 1997 :he is appointed interim CEO of Apple
  • 1998 :release of the first iMac
  • 2001 :release of the first iPod and launch of iTunes
  • 2003 :launch of the iTunes Store, a revolution for dematerialized music
  • 2007 :release of the iPhone, a revolution for the smartphone market, with a multi-touch screen device, equipped with a music player, a telephone interface and a web browser
  • 2008 :launch of the App Store and MacBook Air
  • 2009 :Steve Jobs' health begins to deteriorate severely, he is also operated this year for a liver transplant
  • 2010 :iPad launch
  • 2011 :On January 17, Steve Jobs took an indefinite leave of absence. He will never take the reins of Apple again, since on August 24, he resigned from his position as general manager of Apple. At the same time, he announces his replacement: Tim Cook. Steve Jobs will die on October 4 at 3 p.m. California time at his home in Palo Alto.

Steve Jobs marked his time, both at the head of Apple and at the direction of his other companies. He was recognized as ahomme charismatic, with unique ideas, butsometimes harsh personality.
