We told you about Search GPT on May 11,the OpenAI search engine.Contrary to what the headlines have announced, Sam Altman affirmed that there is no desire to replace the number 1 in the field: Google. The latter is still the most used. In 2023, 91.37% of internet searches were done with it, but a major competitor has just been announced.
In an article published on July 25 on his blog,OpenAI announced the launch of the temporary “Search GPT” prototype.
New search features
SearchGPTallows you to have access to the capabilities of ChatGPT, while taking advantage of the resources available on the internet. As it stands, if you ask ChatGPT a question, it will answer with its knowledge first, unless you specifically ask it to look up information on the internet. It's not specialized for this, but it works pretty well.
Here are the features offered:
- Fast, up-to-date responses: combines the power of AI with real-time insights.
- Clear and relevant sources:includes inline citations and named links.
- Conversational interaction:allows for follow-up questions with shared context.
- Partnership with publishers:connects users with publishers by quoting and linking to their content.
- Managing appearances for editors: Publishers can manage how their content appears.
- Temporary prototype:currently a prototype, with plans for future integration into ChatGPT.
The objective of SearchGPT is to offera much more complete search functionality which will integrate ChatGPT later. In an interview in March 2024, Sam Altman stated that his goal is not to create another Google, but to offer a different way of doing searches on the internet. When Lex Fridman asked the CEO of OpenAI if he wanted to replace Google, this is what he said:
What interests me most is not so much the idea that we can create a better copy of Google Search, but rather the idea that maybe there is a better way to help people find , to exploit and synthesize information. In fact, I think ChatGPT is the ideal solution for some use cases, and I hope we'll make it the same for many other use cases.
Altman finds Google boring: “Google shows you 10 blue links, well, 13 ads, then 10 blue links, and that's one way to find information.» His statement is not completely objective but understandable. Studies show that most users now no longer click on a link, because they find the information they are looking for on the Google search page directly, without having to enter a site. This is possible thanks to Google's new features, which are sometimes criticized, but the reality is that Alphabet is no longer content to only offer links. In particular, we can obtain visual results, routes or locations.
The new era of research
Here's how OpenAI presents SearchGPT:
SearchGPT is designed to help users connect with publishers by quoting and linking to them in searches. Answers feature clear, inline, named attribution and links, so users know where information comes from and can quickly jump to even more results in a sidebar with source links.
Although Altman says he doesn't want to directly compete with Google with SearchGPT, the video demonstration shows otherwise:
The advantage of Search GPT is thatbe able to carry out your search in a conversation, and not be limited to a single prompt, like in a classic Google search.
This all sounds excellent! We imagine that Google could be inspired by the idea, and offer a tool halfway between Google Search and Gemini.Continue reading.
