App Store: commission reduction would benefit 98% of developers

Two weeks ago, Apple unveiled its new program called “App Store for Small Business". The Cupertino company undertakes to recover only 15% of commissions on in-app purchases made by applications that generated less than a million dollars in 2019. Highly criticized for its practices on its online store , the apple brand has therefore decided to make a gesture towards SMEs.

Apple and small developers will benefit from this program

This measure, which will apply from January 2021, should in fact concern most developers. So, according to analytical company AppFigures, 98% of those who earn money on the App Store should benefit from it.

In detail, of the 2 million applications offered, only 376,000 are paid, monetized via a subscription or offer in-app purchases. These apps are produced by 124,500 developers and among them, only 2% earned more than $1 million in 2019.

According to analysts, everyone could therefore benefit from this system. The vast majority of developers will recover more money from January 1st. But Apple is also doing well since the bulk of its revenue comes from companies that will still be subject to the 30% commission. It should also be noted that the Cupertino company also deters many companies from launching antitrust proceedings against it.
