App Store: Spotify makes a big rant against Apple

Since a decision by the US Supreme Court handed down this week, Apple will authorize developers to bill their customers on external platforms.l’App Store. But the Tech giant does not accept this lightly, and it has already warned: 27% fees will be charged on these external transactions (compared to 30% on the App Store), via links integrated into the applications .

Clearly, the developers would gain almost nothing, especially since the Apple brand also plans to make them pay management fees for direct payment. Suffice to say that some companies are up in arms following these announcements, and this is particularly the case of Spotify.

Epic Games rises against Apple

The Swedish company thus sent a press release to numerous media to denounce Apple's strategy described as“scandalous”:

Once again, Apple has demonstrated that they will stop at nothing to protect the profits they make off the backs of developers and consumers through their app store monopoly.

The Swedish streaming giant believes that Apple's choice will not be applicable within the European Union under theDigital Markets Act(DMA) which must apply from March.

As the UK leaves the EU, Spotify turns to its parliamentarians. Quoted bythe BBC, the firm asks:“We strongly urge UK lawmakers to quickly pass the bill to prevent Apple from implementing similar fees, which will help create a more competitive and innovative technology industry for UK consumers and businesses. “

On the heels of Apple's announcements, another well-known rival of the company has come forward. Tim Sweeney,le PDG d’Epic Gamesruled that these 27% fees are“anti-competitive”. He promises to contest“Apple’s Bad Faith Compliance Plan in District Court.”

As we will have understood, the battle between Apple and the big developers over the App Store is very far from over, and it could even increase in intensity over the weeks and months to come.
