Last March, we were telling you about an American company called Grayshift, which was promoting a tool called “GrayKey”. This is shaped like a small box and costs $15,000 to $30,000. It actually allows you to hack any password-protected iPhone model running iOS 11.
However, it appears that the apple firm haschanged something with iOS 12. Since this update,GrayKey boxes are inoperative.
As a reminder, the GrayKey tool looks like a black, portable square box. Two Lightning cables come out of it. Two iPhones can be connected at the same time, for at least two minutes for the tool to install proprietary software.
This software will then take care of finding the unlock code by trying all possible combinations, a process that can take a few hours for a 4-digit code and up to several days for a 6-digit code.
The designers of GrayKey had therefore found a flaw in iOS, which made it possible to avoid the blocking of consecutive code tests, implemented by Apple.
But according to several police agencies in possession of this box, the manipulation does notnow no longer works for devices running iOS 12. Apple has therefore found a way to block GrayKey boxes, at least for the moment.
Security expertshowever, do not know how Apple proceeded to achieve its ends. This new development in the GrayKey affair comes in a context where Tim Cookrecently spoke in Brusselson the importance of protecting personal data.
