Apple is working on its own modem chip, in Qualcomm's backyard

Since last year, Qualcomm, one of Apple's major suppliers for the iPhone and iPad, and in particular their modem chip, has beenin lawsuit with the apple firm. The mobile chip specialist was notably accused by the Cupertino company of anti-competitive practices.

The situation is not about to improve between the two giants, since according to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is recruitingmodem chip specialistson Qualcomm's flowerbeds.

According to well-informed journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple would recruit engineers in the city of San Diego, where Qualcomm's headquarters are located.

More specifically, Apple is looking to recruit designers and engineers specializing inwireless chip design. Job offers mention knowledge of wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, LTE, but also 5G.

This suggests that the Apple firm is looking to internally design its own modem chip for the iPhone, one of the main components of the machine. This allows you to connect to wireless networks.

For the moment, in the midst of a conflict with Qualcomm, Apple is using modem chips from Intel. But in the future, it is not impossible that the Cupertino company usesown homemade modem chips.

For several years, Apple has increasingly designed the main components of the iPhone in-house, with astonishing results, as seen with the A12 and A12X chip.

This makes it possible to offer better performance for its devices, because the components are optimized to work with the software.
