Google offers many mobile applications, some of which require access to the user's location to function properly. But by disabling user location tracking, this is not necessarily enough to stop location tracking.
These are the results of an investigation conducted by the Associated Press, in collaboration with a researcher from Princeton University. It was discovered thatGoogle apps continue to record user location, unless you deactivatea specific setting.
Google apps on Android and iOS continueperiodically record geolocationof the user, even when the latter hasdisabled location history.
Deactivating this last feature simply prevents the daily and precise tracking of the user's geographic journey.
But this is not enough to completely prevent user location tracking in Google apps. This is particularly always used for, for example, the local weather or geolocalized suggestions when opening applications.
To completely stop the position tracking of Google apps, you must deactivate an option called, “Web and app activity“.
This is found in thesettingsfrom the Google Maps app. Go to section “Personal content” and on the new page make sure to disable “Web and app activity", as well as "Location History” if you haven’t already.
Following this AP investigation, a Google spokesperson explains that location is used in several ways. Google also mentions that there are clear descriptions of each feature, with the option for the user to disable everything, if that is their wish.
