Apple patents a stylus, one day for the iPhone? Unlikely...

Steve Jobshas always been strictly against the principle of
“stylus”, which, for him, is an aberration of the touch screen. This
assertion was already at the center of his keynote in 2007 where he revealed the first
iPhone. But what then to think of a patent application filed in 2010 in
which Apple describes a touch screen stylus system intended also
better for the iPhone than for the iPad?

Analyse :

It was to general astonishment that this patent appeared, and numerous sites
around the world have hastily concluded that Apple was thinking about a system
stylus for iPhone. Some journalists have even concluded that since the
death of Steve Jobs, Apple could “finally” take directions other than
those desired by its authoritarian historical boss.

Much ado about nothing we would say. Not only was this patent
filed on November 10, 2010, while Steve Jobs was still alive and well
his position, but in addition the principle of patents is not to file
exclusively future applications which will necessarily be commercialized. A
manufacturer even has every interest in protecting his creations by even anticipating
uses that it does not provide for, it is then a so-called “defensive” patent.
We are most certainly facing one of these cases. And it is unlikely
that Apple is moving away from the paths traced by Steve Jobs for many years
again, as they turned out to be profitable…

Nevertheless it is true that this patent is fun to dissect, especially since it
offers a system for recognizing the position of the stylus without even having to
press the screen…

In the meantime, accessory manufacturers have jumped on the opportunity by
especially on iPad and we havepu
