48 megapixel sensor for iPhone 14 and periscope lens in 2023?

The iPhone has always positioned itself as one of the best smartphones on the market for taking photos and videos. However, when it comes to technical data sheets, compared to Android smartphones of the same generation and range, Apple's devices may seem a little behind.

For example, while some Android smartphones already have 50 or 108 megapixel sensors, Apple has until now limited itself to 12 megapixel sensors. On the other hand, the iPhone does not have components such as periscope lenses for zooming, which are already widely used in the Android ecosystem.

Apple will significantly improve its cameras

The good news is that over the next two years, Apple should bring some new features to its cameras. And recently, in a note, analyst Ming Chi Kuo discussed the Cupertino company's plans in this area.

According to an article on the MacRumours site, which relays this note, Apple should equip theiPhone 14 Proa 48 megapixel sensor. This would allow users to film videos in 8K while for the moment, the iPhone only allows filming in 4K. And that's not all.

This 48-megapixel sensor would allow 12-megapixel photos to be taken in low light to capture more light. This technique, called pixel bining, involves merging adjacent pixels to capture more light and is already widely used by Android device manufacturers.

Then, in 2023, Apple could finally offer a periscope lens on the iPhone. This lens should provide a significant improvement in zoom.

Could Apple become the king of photography?

As usual, since this information is not official, caution remains necessary. But it should be noted that if Apple decides to introduce these features on the iPhone, it will become even more difficult for its competitors to compete with the Cupertino company's cameras.

Currently, although Apple is still satisfied with 12 megapixels and although it does not use periscope zoom, the iPhone is already one of thebest smartphonesof the market for taking photos and videos. According to the DXoMARK laboratory, the reference in the field, the best smartphone cameras are currently the Huawei P50 Pro (144 points), the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra (143 points), the Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ (139 points), the iPhone 13 Pro (137 points) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (137 points).

Remember that in addition to a new camera, the iPhone 14 Pro should also benefit from a new design. According to unofficial sources, on the 2022 “Pro” models, the Cupertino company should replace the notch with a bubble (Android style) on which the front sensor will be placed.

A new processor that will boost photo processing performance

The iPhone 14 series will also use a new chip, which will be the A16 Bionic. And currently, rumors are already circulating about this new component which, logically, will be more efficient than the A15 Bionic of the iPhone 13.

According to a recent rumor, the A16 should benefit from TSMC's 4nm engraving, which will boost performance and energy efficiency. The component would have 6 CPU cores. On the other hand, the number of GPU cores will vary depending on the device on which the chip is installed. Additionally, this chip would support Wifi 6E.
