This European leader does not mince her words against Apple

On June 21, the Cupertino company announced bad news for all its customers within the European Union. The Tech giant has thus explained that it will not offer Apple Intelligence on the old continent (its AI functionalities) when it is launched.

The apple brand notably stated that it feared that the new law in force on digital markets (DMA) prevents it from deploying this technology to its users in the 27 Member States.

Apple in the sights of the EU

This announcement provoked a reaction from Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner responsible for competition. The manager thus underlined:

Apple therefore declared that it would not launch its new functions activated in the IRS environment, and that it would not do so due to its obligations in Europe. And the obligations they have in Europe is to be open to competition, it's sort of the short version of the DMA.

She adds:“And I find it very interesting that they're saying we're now going to deploy AI where we don't have to allow competition. I think that is the most stunning, open statement that they know 100% that this is another way to hinder competition where they have already a dominant position”.

Remember that the Cupertino company has however explained that it intends to launch Apple Intelligence within the European Union. However, it fears that the interoperability requirements promoted by this directive represent a danger for the confidentiality of its users' data.

Note that this is far from being the first bone of contention between Apple and Margrethe Vestager. The latter recently gave a press conference to announce that the Commissionlaunched an investigation, because it accuses the Tech giant of limiting competition from new players, particularly on third-party App Stores.
