On September 7, Tim Cook's teams presentedl’iPhone 14, the latest model from Apple. With some new features, the phone has left no one indifferent and many have remembered the arrival of“crash detection”on the device. This functionality, both software and physical, makes it possible to identify when a user is the victim of a road accident.
Concretely, the iPhone recognizes thanks to its sensors when it is in the car. If the phone feels a strong shock, it triggers this feature. As for thefall detections on Apple Watch, an alert will sound for 10 seconds allowing the user to shut down the system, thereby reducing the risk of false positives.
Six calls in a few weeks
Once the 10 seconds are over, the iPhone itself sends a message to law enforcement to warn them of the accident and request help. This very useful feature has already proven itself in several cars, but not only that. For several weeks, the Cincinnati police force has been called by iPhone 14 from “Kings Island”, an amusement park in the city.
Thrill rides are so powerful that several users have seen their iPhone 14 launch the “Crash Detection” feature when the ride suddenly stops. In an article in the Wall Street Journal, a total of six calls have already been listed.
According to authorities, cases will only explode as the iPhone 14 is sold around the world. An example of false positives that shows a new flaw in Apple's new feature. Already presented as defective in the case of an accident when starting the car, the option is not yet perfect. It's likely that Apple is already working to improve it.
An update coming?
As usual, the brand has not communicated on the subject but an update could arrive in the coming weeks. Apple could thus create “black zones” places on the planet where the functionality would be disabled by default. The risk of a car accident is zero in an amusement park.
While waiting to know what Apple's next update has in store for us, it is still possible for the user to take control. By going to the iPhone 14 settings it is possible to deactivate the option. A manual solution that avoids disturbing emergency services during your next trip to a theme park.
