Apple had already warned its investors. In a note published in February, the Cupertino company indicated that because of the coronavirus epidemic, many stores are closed or very little frequented and as a result, sales will drop.
And if for the moment, Apple has not yet given a precise number concerning the impact of the epidemic on its sales in the Middle Kingdom, an article recently published by Reuters gives us a little idea.
Citing Chinese government documents, Reuters indicates that in February, Apple shipped fewer than 500,000 iPhones to China, compared to 1.27 million units in February 2019.
But Apple would not be an isolated case since all smartphone brands would have shipped a total of 6.34 million smartphones in February, compared to 14 million units in February 2019, a drop of 54.7%.
Sales are falling, and iPhone shortage is possible
Apple has already indicated that when announcing its next quarterly results, the results will not be achieved. On the one hand, the epidemic affects sales in China, but it also causes problems in the supply chain.
Although the iPhone is not assembled in Hubei province, and factories were already reopened in February, the return of production to normal is happening more slowly than expected. As a result, Apple even anticipates that there will be iPhone shortages due to these supply issues.
Moreover, we are currently also starting to observe the first signs of shortage.
Recently, an article published by the New York Postnotedthat many retailers in New York City no longer have an iPhone 11 available in stock. And none of the store employees interviewed by the NYP would know when the iPhone 11 might be available again.
Earlier, we also discussed arumoraccording to which Apple would have warned its technicians that the stock of replacement iPhones, for irreparable devices, could also be exhausted.
