France attacks Apple, which denounces advertising tracking but practices it

TheCNIL, a French organization closely linked to the government and responsible for protecting the privacy of citizens, received a serious complaint last week from the France Digitale lobby. Led by Marie Ekeland, it accuses Apple of taking advantage of its dominant position to impose rules on advertisers that it itself does not follow, in fact favoring its own applications and services.

Concretely, what the association criticizes the Apple is its new functionality which allowsdisable behavioral tracking on iOS 14. Many publishers, including Facebook, have already denounced it. In fact, the latter drastically limits the personalized targeting possibilities essential for advertisements. However, for its part, Cupertino benefits from all the personal data it collects by promoting its own content according to each individual, particularly on the App Store.

Investigation

To respond to France Digitale's complaints, the CNIL has chosen to launch a full investigation aimed at shedding light on this matter. It is not clear when it will begin or which departments at Tim Cook's firm will be affected, but hearings with his representatives are planned. Once again, Apple will therefore be forced to face legislators andanswer their questions as is already the case in the United States.

It's hard to know what might happen next. But if our decision-makers ultimately choose to bend the Californian brand, then many other regions could take inspiration from it. Will the case set a precedent abroad? No one knows, but some specialists on the subject already believe thatApple is likely to losein similar files. Suspense, then…

The applications concerned

More specifically, beyond the App Store, it is also the news catalog ofApple Newswho is singled out. Because it offers articles based on the tastes and reading habits of its members, collected precisely by the developer while he criticizes this solution when other social networks use it.

Finally, it's the appBoursewhich is now in the sights of the CNIL. For the same reasons, but this time regarding the different stock prices that can be followed in real time.
