Choosing the eSIM standard rather than the traditional plastic SIM card has several advantages. Already, it isfaster: this way, you no longer need to wait a few days to receive the chip. Second benefit: the theoretical unlocking of all compatible mobiles, if manufacturers adapt accordingly. At Apple, there are already iPhones without any physical SIM card port (sold in the United States only), but in France the technology is struggling to find subscribers.
It must be said that operators are quite cautious: often, you will be asked topayer l’activation, which doesn't seem very fair given its ease of deployment. What's more, not all customers are yet entitled to it. This was the case at Free, until this month. Xavier Niel's firm only offered the eSIM to new customers. But a recent update of its services now offers it to everyone, including the oldest users.

To take advantage of this change, you must go to your subscriber area. A message will then ask you to activate the eSIM, but you will have to…10 euros, like at SFR or Bouygues Télécom. That is more than the price of the package for many Free customers who have chosen this ISP for its reduced rates. As a reminder, at Free, you can only pay two euros to be entitled to two hours of calls per month, with unlimited texts and 50 MB of data.
In order to activate the eSIM on your current offer, it is possible to go through Free support viaWhatsApp. It's not very practical, but it's worth it if, for example, you want to communicate easily with two numbers from the same iPhone.
Not yet for connected objects
For the moment, the new eSIM option for Free plans already subscribedlimited to smartphones. So you cannot activate it onles Apple Watch, which are nevertheless compatible with this system in their versionGPS + Cellular. Damage.
