5,38 millions: this is the number of smartphones reportedly sold in the Gulf Cooperation Council region. This economic community brings together six Arab and Muslim monarchies interspersed between Africa and Iran. There we find the very rich Qatar, but also Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, the last three members also participating in OPEC.
Compared to the results of the first quarter of 2021, this figure marks aparticularly significant increase of 8.2%. It is difficult to know if the trend will follow in the coming weeks, especially since a shortage of processors risks spreading. It would also be - in part - to be attributed to the Ever Given cargo ship, stranded until recently at the gates of the same geographical area in the Suez Canal.
The competition is tough
The study behind this information, shared by the IDC firmalready in favor of the success of the iPad in China, specifies thatSamsungremains (by a long way) at the top of sales, taking almost half of all smartphones sold there. Apple ranks second (23%), followed by Xiaomi then Huawei. Brands also often at the top of the global podium.
For comparison,Apple has sold around fifteen million iPhones in the United States according to recent figures from Canalys, based on the second quarter of 2020 this time. Suffice to say that the Gulf countries seem well on their way to generating a significant part of the apple brand's revenues. Not to mention that delivery costs are probably more affordable there: TSMC and its factories are closer.
Future
IDC nevertheless assumes that despite this encouraging growth, mobile sales in the Gulf couldfall by 0.7% by the end of June. Among the reasons for this decline, the firm obviously cites the potential lack of CPU due to the current crisis. But everywhere, manufacturers seem to be reacting in the best way: stocks are in fact already there to deal with such a situation, although we cannot estimate their volume at the moment.
Furthermore, restrictions linked to the pandemic have now been lifted in many states, which should leave the way open for international trade to resume with a vengeance.
