Google changes its mind: YouTube finally comes to Vision Pro

For the moment, everything suggests that the helmetVision Proof Apple is selling well. But to ensure the long-term success of this new product category, Apple will need to ensure that its platform has a good catalog of applications. Currently, Vision Pro users already have 600 applications specially designed for the headset, and more than a million iOS or iPadOS applications which have been ported to visionOS with the agreement of the developers.

On the other hand, certain almost essential applications are still missing. And among these there are Spotify, Netflix and YouTube, which are only accessible via Safari. And firstly,YouTubedidn't really seem keen on developing an app for Apple's Vision Pro headset.“YouTube users will be able to use YouTube in Safari on Vision Pro”, indicated a representative of the video platform, in a statement relayed by The Verge on January 19.

But the situation seems to have evolved, since YouTube now indicates that it will develop an app for Apple's mixed reality platform.“We're excited to see the launch of Vision Pro and we're supporting it by ensuring YouTube users have a great experience in Safari. We have no specific plans to share at this time, but can confirm that a Vision Pro app is on our roadmap”, said the same YouTube representative, according to a new article from The Verge.

Google and Samsung are preparing a competing product

It is not known what led Google to provide these details. But it is possible that the Mountain View firm has decided to finally create an official YouTube app for the Vision Pro, following the announcement of a third-party client that would have filled the void. Recently, the media have indeed mentioned the existence of an application called Juno, offered at $5, which serves as a client for watching YouTube videos on Vision Pro.

Otherwise, it should be remembered that Google is already working with Samsung on a product competing with the Vision Pro. This project was announced by Samsung, during a product launch, in 2023. And to power the future headset, Google and Samsung are relying on a partnership with Qualcomm, which will supply the chips. Moreover, Qualcomm has already presented a new chip dedicated to mixed reality which, according to him, will be used by Google and Samsung. But for the moment, we do not know when this Vision Pro competitor will be made official.
