Upgrading your Mac Studio's storage is a maneuver that can seem very complex, if not impossible. However, a YouTuber named “dosdude1” has proven that anything is possible with the right elements and great knowledge. In this video, published on his channel recently, he explains that he wanted to increase the storage capacities of his Mac Studio M1 at a lower cost.
A complicated manipulation, which he nevertheless succeeded. As he explains in the video, Apple has made the choice for several years, and the transition to Apple Silicon chips, to solder the storage directly to the motherboard. A choice that makes it almost impossible to modify components within the Apple brand's desktop computer.
We do not advise you to reproduce this experience at home. You need solid knowledge to avoid damaging the elements at the heart of your Mac Studio and the slightest wrong move can have catastrophic consequences on the functioning of the computer as a whole.
If you want to increase the storage capacities of your computer, we still advise you to use an external hard drive. The Mac Studio has one of the best write speeds on the market, making copying data truly smooth.
But when it comes to dosdude1, things are very different. He managed to integrate a NAND module purchased on Ebay into his computer. After complex manipulations, and soldering (see the video) a lot, it ends up integrating a new SSD, for much less expensive than Apple.
Fighting Apple's Prices
Because the other solution to having a computer with a lot of storage is also to trust Apple and configure your machine before purchasing. It's no longer a secret to many people that Apple makes very good margins on its devices with a level of storage above the standard.
The price of a Mac Studio can therefore vary between more than 2,500 euros between the 1TB version and the 8TB version. At this price you can treat yourself to another computer, such as a MacBook Pro M3 with 1TB of storage.
