It creates an iPhone with Lightning port and a USB-C (both at the same time)

  • A YouTube channel posts a video showing how it equipped an iPhone with a dual port (a Lightning and a USB-C)
  • This seems to work for both charging and transferring data with a computer
  • Currently, Apple is preparing to replace its proprietary port with USB-C to comply with a European rule

While waiting for the release of the first iPhones with USB-C ports, engineers are having fun transforming existing models by replacing Apple's proprietary port with a USB-C. One of these engineers,Ken Pillonel, made a splash in 2021 by creating (and then selling) the very first iPhone with a USB-C port. And as the Apple Insider site notes, another person went even further by providing an iPhone with two ports: a Lightning and a USB-C.

In the YouTube video below, a Korean-language channel shows how it modified an iPhone to implement this dual port. It was necessary to review the circuit, but also to drill a new hole in the chassis of the device, since Apple has only provided one port for charging and for data transfer on its smartphones. In any case, it seems to work, since towards the end of the video, the YouTube channel carries out a series of tests by connecting the iPhone to a computer, using the Lightning port, then the USB-C port.

Towards the end of Lighting?

Note that currently, the Lightning port on iPhone is disappearing. At least, this is the case for the models that will be sold in Europe. Apple values its proprietary technology, which also allows it to generate revenue (royalties paid by accessory manufacturers). However, European legislation will force smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, to adopt USB-C. This aims to reduce electronic waste, and make charging devices easier (thanks to a universal port).

Apple has already indicated that it will comply.Having no choice,Apple will sell iPhones with USB-C ports instead of Lightning. But he remains critical of the new European rule. In the meantime, people who modify their iPhones show us that for a company like Apple, it shouldn't be complicated to replace its proprietary port with USB-C.

On the technical side, USB-C could even bringnew benefitsto Apple customers, such as faster data transfer speed. According to rumors, this change could be made by the firm on the iPhone 15 series this year.
