Ken Pillonel made himself known a few months ago by placinga USB-C charging port at the bottom of an iPhone. An unprecedented maneuver at the time which attracted the curiosity of thousands of people while rumors around a USB-C iPhone are growing.
A few days ago, the Exploring the Simulation YouTube channel shared the engineer's new achievements. He managed to install a USB-C charging port on the AirPods Pro case. Faced with the admiration and popularity of his videos, Pillonel decided to launch a “kit” allowing you to build a USB-C port on your Apple headphones yourself.
He explains that the boxes sold by Apple are not repairable“they obtained a score of 0 out of 10 by iFixit for both the “classic” generations and for the “Pro” model”. But by using its 3D plan to create a new case with a USB-C charging port, it would then be possible to “break” the real case of the headphones in order to recover the components.
With three batteries welded to the chassis,AirPods Proare almost impossible to repair and this solution is to date the best way to upgrade the case without rendering it unusable.
Europe forces Apple's hand
The Pillonel “kit” should nevertheless have a fairly short lifespan. A few weeks ago a directive from the European Commission required all manufacturers of electronic devices to switch to a USB-C charging port to have the right to be sold on the old continent.
This obligation should lead to changes on the iPhone, but also on the next AirPods Pro model. The case should have the right to USB-C in its original configuration, a first for Apple in its history.
