It was one of the big new features of iOS 16 and now it has just arrived in the beta of the iPhone operating system. Announced during the last edition of WWDC by Tim Cook's teams, the deletion and modification in iMessage were welcomed with open arms by users.
In this fourth beta of iOS 16(the first 100% public), we learn that modified messages will include the mention and that it will be possible, with a simple click, to see the original version of the message. Apple also shows that it will be possible to modify messages for 2 minutes after sending, compared to 15 originally.
This same time should be given to users to delete a message sent in error. Still regarding the modification of messages, Apple explains that it will only be possible to edit a message 5 times. As a reminder, the Cupertino company was criticized a few weeks ago when presenting its solution. Indeed, the allotted time of 15 minutes could have facilitated the harassment.
This solution had a flaw
As we explainedin this article, it would be possible to carry out massive spam campaigns for just a few minutes before erasing all traces, making prosecution almost impossible. While editing or deleting a message is a good solution for small, everyday mistakes, this feature can also have serious consequences in people's lives.
Apple therefore corrected the situation by lowering the time given to modify or delete a message. The other big new thing should therefore be the arrival of this “modification history”, which will not allow harassers to modify their offensive comments or manipulate a conversation by modifying it later.
iOS 16 expected for the start of the school year
Regarding iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 which are the two Apple operating systems which will be entitled to this new functionality, they should be available in their final version a few days after the release of the iPhone 14. The latter should be presented in four different versions at the beginning of September. For the moment, Apple has not communicated the exact release date of the device.
