iOS 17: NameDrop, the new iPhone feature that is already essential

  • NameDrop allows you to share your contact details in seconds
  • All you have to do is bring your iPhone close to someone else's, and that's it.
  • AirDrop gets other new features with iOS 17

During the Worldwide Developer Conference still underway in the United States, Apple unveiled the functionalityNameDrop. This allows anyone to bring their iPhone close to someone else's to instantly share their contact details. It is possible, during this operation, to choose which data is sent: do you prefer that it is only the telephone number? or also the email address? It's up to you.

NameDrop not only works with iPhones, but also Apple Watch smartwatches. The manufacturer specifies, however, that not all models are yet compatible, and that the update bringing this new feature is not yet available. You will need to be equipped with a Series 6, a Series 7, aSeries 8, a first or second generation Apple Watch SE or an Apple Watch Ultra to take advantage of it. Or, it seems, a device equipped with UWB (ultra-wideband) technology.

AirDrop is improving at the same time

During its conference, Apple also specified that AirDrop, closely linked to NameDrop, would benefit from some additional improvements. Thanks to the same gesture as for the new sharing of contacts, it is now possible to start listening to music withSharePlay, play a game with others or start playing an Apple TV+ series in the same way.

On iPhones equipped withDynamic Island(THEiPhone 14 Proand the iPhone 14 Pro Max only, for the moment), it is the latter which will come alive when receiving the information.

No need to be connected anymore!

With this, Apple explains that if you start a transfer to another iPhone but the network suddenly cuts out, then you can stop the sending with peace of mind. The mobile will in fact remember the action started, and will be able toresume it as soon as an access point is available again. There is one major prerequisite to know, however: the recipient and the sender must have an active iCloud account associated with their smartphone.

Postponing sending in the event of disconnection is not yet available with the beta which has just been released for developers. You will have to wait to be entitled to it, Apple specifying that the new product will arrive “later this year“.
