The M4 chip present under the hood of the iPad Pro reaches a record performance of3 810 pointsin multi-core with the Geekbench app, against for example 3,300 points for an Intel Core i9-14900KF. For comparison, the M3 processor present under the hood of the MacBook Pro achieves a score of 3,087 points here. In short, on paper at least,the touchscreen tablet seems faster than the laptop.
As a reminder, Apple's M4 processor is equipped with a ten-core GPU, regardless of the iPad Pro model chosen. The same goes for the Neural Engine with sixteen cores, which will therefore not have been entitled to double the number, contrary to what was expected by some. To this, we must add eight gigabytes of RAM, for the 256 GB and 512 GB iPad Pros, or sixteen for models with 1 TB or 2 TB of internal storage.
A chip soon on Mac?
Since the beginning of its range of proprietary chips, Apple has had the habit of offering them first on Macs before it is possible to benefit from them on tablets. With the M4 processor, however, it's aexceptionwhich made the headlines, since today no Mac is yet entitled to this hardware. But it’s a safe bet that this will be the case within a few months.
The MacBook Air having been renewed recently, it is difficult to see them being entitled to the M4 this year. On the other hand, it would be logical to discover newMacBook Pro14 and 16 inch models with M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chips by the end of the year. Patience…
Other technical characteristics of the M4 chip
The M4 chip ofiPad Pro OLEDis also equipped with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and no less than120 gigabytes per second of memory bandwidth. As for the CPU, it comes in two versions. The iPad Pro component with 256 GB and 512 GB of internal storage thus integrates three performance cores and six high energy efficiency cores. Where the most expensive iPad Pro M4s are entitled to one more performance core, bringing their total number to ten.
